UN Telemedicine Project

Medical teams at United Nations peacekeeping missions work tirelessly to protect the lives of peacekeepers serving in high-risk environments. However, given the resource-constrained settings in which most UN operations take place, access to specialized services and timely care is often limited. Telemedicine provides UN health facilities with critical access to medical expertise that is not typically available in mission contexts.

Launched in March 2021 under the DOS Triangular Partnership Programme (TPP), the Telemedicine Project aims to improve the quality and timeliness of medical care for peacekeepers through innovative digital communication technologies. Between September 2022 and July 2025, multiple pilot initiatives have been implemented across eight UN field missions and over 30 sites, including external Level 4 hospitals in Member States. The Project was awarded the 2023 Secretary-General’s Award in the UN2.0 “Quintet of Change” category for its transformative impact on healthcare in peacekeeping operations.
