WMO Chat: Can AI Bridge the Earth System Knowledge Gap?

Artificial intelligence (AI) language models present a promising solution to make Earth system science user-friendly for experts and non-experts, a critical step towards effective climate action.

The Challenge:
We face the challenge of strengthening communication efforts to ensure universal access to information for preparedness against extreme weather, climate, and water events, particularly for the most vulnerable. Achieving this requires making Earth system science user-friendly for both experts and non-experts, a critical step towards effective climate action and ensuring that meteorological, climatological, and hydrological services receive the political backing they deserve.

The Solution:
Artificial intelligence (AI) language models present a promising solution to these challenges. The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) houses a comprehensive library of reports of immense scientific value. However, the information an individual, businessperson, or policymaker may need to comprehend the magnitude of the climate crisis might be scattered across various digital platforms or be in language that is too challenging to comprehend and act upon. To address this, the WMO has developed a specialized pilot AI, akin to ChatGPT, named askWMO.

askWMO is a conversational AI (Question-Answering AI assistant, chatbot) grounded on WMO-selected publications from the e-Library. It serves to:

* Strengthen support and engagement with WMO Members, easing the process of asking questions about WMO publications from the e-Library.
* Improve communication between the WMO Secretariat and Members.
* Make technical regulations, guidelines, and other publications more accessible to Members.
* Make EC/Cg resolutions traceable.

Innovation Highlight:
askWMO exemplifies innovation by harnessing AI to bridge the gap between complex scientific data and its practical application. By providing tailored answers with references and sources from WMO publications, askWMO ensures that critical information is accessible and comprehensible to all users. This not only enhances communication and preparedness but also promotes informed decision-making and political support for climate-related services.
